چکیده

Identifying quantitative trait loci in experimental crosses Identifying the genetic loci responsible for variation in traits which are quantitative in nature (such as the yield from an agricultural crop or the number of abdominal bristles on a fruit y) is a problem of great importance to biologists. The number and eeects of such loci help us to understand the biochemical basis of these traits, and of their evolution in populations over time. Moreover, knowledge of these loci may aid in designing selection experiments to improve the traits. We focus on data from a large experimental cross. The usual methods for analyzing such data use multiple tests of hypotheses. We feel the problem is best viewed as one of model selection. After a brief review of the major methods in this area, we discuss the use of model selection to identify quantitative trait loci. Forward selection using a BIC-type criterion is found to perform quite well. Simulation studies are used to compare the performance of the major approaches. In addition, we present the analysis of data from a real experiment.

A model selection approach for the identification of quantitative trait loci in experimental crosses

We consider the problem of identifying the genetic loci (called quantitative trait loci (QTLs)) contributing to variation in a quantitative trait, with data on an experimental cross. A large number of different statistical approaches to this problem have been described; most make use of multiple tests of hypotheses, and many consider models allowing only a single QTL. We feel that the problem i...

Review of statistical methods for QTL mapping in experimental crosses.

Identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in experimental animals is critical for understanding the biochemical bases of complex traits, and thus for the identification of drug targets. The author reviews the basic statistical methods for mapping QTLs in experimental crosses and comments on a number of the statistical issues to consider in the application of these methods.

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci onto a Phylogenetic Tree

Despite advances in genetic mapping of quantitative traits and in phylogenetic comparative approaches, these two perspectives are rarely combined. The joint consideration of multiple crosses among related taxa (whether species or strains) not only allows more precise mapping of the genetic loci (called quantitative trait loci, QTL) that contribute to important quantitative traits, but also offe...

R/qtl: QTL Mapping in Experimental Crosses

SUMMARY R/qtl is an extensible, interactive environment for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in experimental populations derived from inbred lines. It is implemented as an add-on package for the freely-available statistical software, R, and includes functions for estimating genetic maps, identifying genotyping errors, and performing single-QTL and two-dimensional, two-QTL genome scans by ...

Detection of Expression Quantitative Trait Loci in Complex Mouse Crosses: Impact and Alleviation of Data Quality and Complex Population Substructure

Complex Mus musculus crosses, e.g., heterogeneous stock (HS), provide increased resolution for quantitative trait loci detection. However, increased genetic complexity challenges detection methods, with discordant results due to low data quality or complex genetic architecture. We quantified the impact of theses factors across three mouse crosses and two different detection methods, identifying...
